Canadian Art... Lots of pictures.

A few days ago, I went to the UBC (University of British Columbia)  museum with a couple of friends to see how Canadians of the past looked like and what are their most famous sculptures, Totems and classic old painted art... Basically the "Old Canadians" were people way different than people from the present. They were smaller, black hair, brown eyes, brown skin and Asian aspect. Also, all the sculptures in the pictures below respresent and are part of their religious thoughts... Plus, each of the animals, figures and mythological creatures correspond to a different family and condescensions. 

Hace algunos días fuí al Museo de UBC (Universidad de British Columbia) con unos amigos para ver como eran los Canadienses en el pasado y como son sus famosas esculturas, Totems y arte antiguo. Básicamente, los Canadienses del pasado eran muy diferentes a los de ahora. Ellos eran mas pequeños, tenian, pelo negro, ojos cafés, piel marrón y aspecto asiático. Todas las esculturas delas fotos representan  pensamientos religiosos.... Asimismo cada animal, figura y criatura mitologica corresponde a una familia y condescendencia diferente.

The next images are not part of the Canadian old art, but i found them really nice so i put them on this entire. They are inspired on the Totems and the sculptures though.

What is going on?.....

As you know, I was staying in a Home-stay of a Philippinian family in Burnaby (south part of Vancouver), and my plan was basically going to the States in this current week. But actually because I'm enjoying Vancouver so much, I 'll be staying here for two more weeks! Now, the "complicated" part is that i don`t have a Home-stay anymore, so i have to find a new place to sleep by my own ... Right now I'm living in an apartment in Kitstilano beach a quite neighborhood close to downtown. A couple of Swiss (Alexa and Julien) the owners of the flat who work in the film industry and Stop Motion projects as well are hosting me for a couple of nights more (I've been here since last Sunday). Plus, I'm having fun around here, there is so much to talk and discuss; Movie likes and dislikes, political and cultural perspectives, Woody Allen (we all are "fans" of him here) and many more interesting topics... (for me that is tons of fun!)... In the coming days if everything goes well i will find another place  to stay, maybe, through CouchSurfing. At this moment it's practically where the adventure begins!

Como saben, yo me estaba quedando en el Home-stay de una familia de Filipinos en Burnaby (la parte Sur de Vancouver) y mi plan básicamente era que en esta semana iba a ir a los Estados Unidos. Pero como estoy pasándola tan bien en Vancouver, me quedaré por dos semanas mas! Ahora, la parte "complicada" es que como ya no tengo Home-stay, tengo que buscar un lugar por mi cuenta... Ahora mismo, estoy viviendo en un apartamento en Kitsilano beach, un tranquilo barrio cerca de el centro. Una pareja de Suizos (Alexa y Julien) los dueños del apartamento, los cuales trabajan en Cine y proyectos de Stop Motion me están hospedando por un par de noches mas (he estado aquí desde el Domingo pasado). Además, la estoy pasando muy bien por aqui, hay mucho por hablar y discutir; gustos y disgustos de películas, perspectivas de política y cultura, Woody Allen (por aqui todos somos "fan" de el) y muchos otros interesantes temas (para mi es bastante divertido)... En los próximos días si todo sale bien, voy a encontrar otro sitio para dormir, tal vez, a través de CouchSurfing. Practicamente en este momento es donde empieza la aventura!

Spring is Coming.

Now the facts are talking by themselves, Spring is really coming. The weather is different then 2 weeks after, and the leaves started growing a couple of days... Awesome! For some people it is not so special as it is for me, as you know, in Medellin, Colombia (The city of the eternal Spring) the trees are green the whole. There aren't seasons. That is why it catches my attention.

Ahora los datos están hablando por ellos mismos, La Primavera esta llegando. El clima es diferente del el de 2 semanas atrás, las hojas empezaron a creces hace unos días... Maravilloso! Para algunas personas no es algo tan especial, pero para mi, que vivo en Medellin, Colombia (La ciudad de la eterna primavera) los arboles son verdes todo el año. No hay estaciones. Por eso es que me llama la atención.

Delicious Tim Hortons.

Oh Tim Hortons! This Delicious coffee house is all around the country. It has a "Canada" written on in everything. It sells a wonderful and delicious "Maple Dip Donut" that with just one bite you can taste the Canadian soul and North spirit in your mouth. I know it is sounds gushy and exaggerated but i really love this place. People say that it sells good coffee, nice sandwiches, and small snacks such as wraps, soups, lasagna, etc. It is all you need!... Plus, Tim Hortons has a Canadian history as well. People say long time ago, Tim Horton (a famous Hockey player) was killed in a coffee house so the company put his name on the local and then it got famous and turned to what is now. (the biggest company related to food, coffee and bakery in Canada!)....However the real history is that Tim Horton founded this company years ago. In conclusion: Tim Hortons is Canada!

Oh Tim Hortons! Este delicioso sitio que esta alrededor del país, tiene "Canadá" escrito en todas partes. Venden una maravillosa "Dona de Syrup de Maple" que con solo un mordisco uno puede sentir el alma Canadiense y el espíritu del Norte en la boca. Yo se que suena bastante exagerado pero realmente amo este sitio. La gente dice que venden buen café, ricos sandwiches y pequeños snacks como wraps, sopas y lasañas. Es todo lo que uno necesita!... Aparte de eso Tim Horton tiene una historia Canadiense también. La gente dice que hace un tiempo Tim Horton (un famoso jugador de Hockey) fue asesinado en una cafetería, así que la compañía decidió ponerle el nombre de él al local, éste se volvió famoso hasta convertirse en lo que es ahora. (la compañía mas grande en Canadá de venta de comida, café y panadería!).... Sin embargo la verdadera historia es que un jugador de Hockey llamado Tim Horton fundó esta compañía años atrás. La conclusión es: Tim Hortons es Canadá!

(My first day in Vancouver at 2am after I arrived at the airport I went to this Tim Horton located in Downtown... There, i met the people that hosted me my first night... Coincidence (I don't think so))

(Mi primer día en Vancouver a las 2am luego de llegar al aeropuerto fui a este Tim Hortons en Downtown... Allí, conocí a las personas que me hospedaron la primera noche.... Coincidencia (no lo creo))

Vancouver Island... Tofino, Nanaimo and the Road.

The last weekend (from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening) three more friends (Aline, Jennifer and Jèrôme) and me went to Vancouver Island... Everything was good; nice food, nice company, beautiful landscapes, good weather (sometimes)... Just Great!

El fin de semana pasado (desde el Viernes en la tarde hasta el Domingo en la noche) tres amigos (Aline, Jennifer y Jèrôme) y yo fuimos a Vancouver Island... Todo estuvo bacano: buena comida, buena compañía, bellos paisajes, buen clima (algunas veces)... Simplemente brutal!

Day # 1:

After School we took a bus to Horseshoe bay and catched the Ferrie to Nanaimo. Nanaimo is a small port located in the east coast of Vancouver Island, it seems like a fishermans town but it is a lovely city though. Good bakeries, pubs and restaurants. Once there we went looking for accommodation and found a good hotel for "just" 150 dollars a night each (wtf? That's a lot of money) So we decided to look for a hostel and  we found the Painted Turtle, a nice hostel where we slept Friday night. Later we went to eat something in one of the restaurants in Nanaimo, the place was really good, I had a nice pasta there. Then we went to a pub really close to the hostel where we chated and laughed... lots of fun in Nanaimo.

Despues de la escuela tomamos un bus para la bahía de Horseshoe donde tomamos el ferry para Nanaimo. Nanaimo es un pequeño puerto ubicado en la costa este de la Isla de Vancouver, es un puerto pesquero y una bonita ciudad. Buenas panadería, bares y restaurantes. Una vez ahí fuimos a buscar un sitio para dormir y encontramos un hotel por "solo" 300 mil pesos la noche cada uno (eso es mucha plata!) entonces decidimos buscar un hostal y encontramos el Painted Turtle, un buen hostal en donde pasamos la noche del Viernes. Mas tarde fuimos a comer algo en uno de los restaurantes de Nanaimo, el lugar estaba bastante bueno, me comí una buena pasta. Después fuimos a un bar muy cerca del hostal donde hablamos y nos reímos mucho... Nos divertimos en Nanaimo.

(Este fue el hostal en donde nos quedamos la noche del viernes, Todo estuvo bastante bien pero no tan bueno como el  Hostal Antiguo (El hostal de mi familia en Medellin, Colombia.))

Day # 2:

After spending the night in the hostel we went to have breakfast in a "French" bakery. It was delicious! I had baguette, scramble eggs and bacon. Then we headed to the car rental, it was a mess doing all the arrangement and the paper work but we finally got the car. We put it on and hit the road! It was really good, a classic Canadian highway with lots of parks and landmarks in the way like the Coombs market and a few pines forest. At 4 o'clock in the afternoon we arrived Tofino, a beautiful and mysterious town in the south west of Vancouver Island, the weather wasn't so good it was gray and somehow scary. At night we went to this amazing restaurant, famous for its sea food, it was delicious and the ambient was really smooth and relaxing. We had a great night, then as usual Jerome and i went to a pub to watch the Canucks Game (famous Hockey team) and grabbed some beers.

Después de una buena noche en el hostal, fuimos a comer el desayuno en un panadería "francesa". Estuvo delicioso, me comí una baguette, huevos revueltos y tocineta. Luego nos dirigimos al sitio de renta de carros, fue un desastre todo el papeleo pero finalmente conseguimos el carro. Lo prendimos y a andar se dijo! estuvo brutal, clásicas autopistas Canadienses con sitios de interés como el mercado Coobs y unos cuantos bosques de pinos. A las 4 de la tarde, llegamos a Tofino, un maravilloso y misterioso pueblo en el sur oeste de la Isla de Vancouver. El clima no estuvo tan bueno, entonces todo estaba gris y un poco escalofriante. En la noche fuimos a un restaurante famoso por su comida de mar. Estuvo delicioso y el ambiente era relajante y tranquilo, pasamos  rico. Luego como de costumbre Jerome y yo fuimos a un bar para ver el Partido de los Canucks (un famoso equipo de Hockey) y tomar cerveza.

Day # 3:

Finally, in our last day we woke up early in the morning, we had coffee and bread for breakfast and then went to the famous beaches of Tofino where the youth have fun surfing and chilling out in the sunny days, sadly for us it wasn't sunny at all, although we had a great time. The whole trip was amazing. We talked a lot and we laughed a lot! Thank you guys for everything I'll remember those days for the rest of my live. 

Finalmente, en nuestro ultimo dia nos levantamos temprano, tomamos desayuno y fuimos a las famosas playas de Tofino, donde la juventud se divierte surfiando y pasando el rato en los dias soleados, tristemente para nosotros no lo fue, sin embargo la pasamos rico. Todo el viaje fue maravilloso. Hablamos mucho y nos reimos mucho! Gracias por todo, recordaré esos dias por el resto de mi vida.

1000 views to Through an Adventure, that's amazing! Thanks everyone, it is important for me know that there is people out there looking at my "cybernetic diary"... Below, there's some pictures of animals and common things of Vancouver such as Water planes and Parks Sculptures. Tomorrow I'm going to Vancouver Island with 3 Swiss friends. Basically we're going to rent a car to travel around the island   (Nanaimo and Tofino) during 3 days. I will put an new entire about the road trip in a few days. 

1000 visitas a Through an Adventure, Brutal! Gracias a todos, es bastante importante para mi saber que hay personas al rededor del mundo que visitan mi "diario cibernético".... Colombia 404, Canadá 271, USA 151, Italy 53, Rusia 42, Germany 33, Switzerland  27... y muchos mas. Abajo hay algunas imágenes de animales y cosas de Vancouver como los Hidroaviones y las esculturas en los parques. Mañana me voy para La Isla de Vancouver con 3 amigos de Suiza. Básicamente vamos a alquilar un carro y viajar a través de la isla (Nanaimo y Tofino) durante 3 días. Pondré una nueva entrada en un par de días.

Ice Skating.

For Canadians the Ice Skating and Hockey is like Futbol for Brazilians, Baseball and American Football for USA... It is a tradition. So today with few friends from the school we went to the Robson Ice Ring (an small ice ring close to our school) the entrance was free, and the skates rental for just 4 dollars. It was really cheap. Then you just have to Enjoy it! but for me it wasn't that easy (hahaha) it was the first time I ever put on a pair of skates and jumped into the ice. At first as you can see in the picture below i used a kids helper (a plastic device for those who can not skate very well. Like me) it was ok, but that is not what I was looking for. After few laps with the "helper" Jérôme and Christophe took me and helped me to start to skate by myself... Thanks guys for that it was really helpful.... Than after a few falls and complaints about how difficult it was, I jumped to the Ice Ring again and I made it!, now I can say... I know how to skate on ice (but not as good and smooth as everyone). I had a nice afternoon full of new feelings, knowledges and sensations. Thanks y'all for the help and the support! 

Para los canadienses el patinaje sobre hielo y el Hockey son como el Fútbol para los Brasileños, El Béisbol y el Fútbol Americano para la USA. ... Es una tradición. Así que hoy, con unos cuantos amigos de la escuela fuimos a la pista de hielo de Robson St. (una pequeña pista de hielo cerca de la escuela) La entrada era gratis, y el alquiler de patines a sólo 4 dólares. Es bastante barato. De resto, solo hay que disfrutar! pero para mí no fue tan fácil (jajaja) es la primera vez que me pongo un par de patines y me lanzo al hielo. Al principio, como se puede ver en la imagen de abajo usé un "ayudante" para niños (un dispositivo de plástico para los que no pueden patinar muy bien. Como yo) estubo bien, pero eso no es lo que yo estaba buscando. Después de pocas vueltas con la "ayuda" del aparato de plástico Jérôme y Christophe me ayudaron a empezar a patinar sin nada ... Gracias fue de gran ayuda!.... Luego de unas cuantas caídas y de quejarme de lo difícil que era, fui a la pista de hielo de nuevo y finalmente lo logré!, Ahora  puedo decir: Yo sé cómo patinar sobre hielo (pero no soy tan bueno como todo el mundo). Tuve una agradable tarde llena de nuevos conocimientos y sensaciones. Muchas gracias a todos ustedes por la ayuda y el apoyo!

Quietly and Mountains.

It is getting colder and colder...  I was talking about the weather in the last entries because this whole thing is new for me, I mean, the four season climate! Here you can watch the Weather channel and then decide if you have to bring your jacket with you or not (It is amazing). Today i  finally had "contact" with the Snow but it wasn't too much, still good for me. The last Friday I went to Granville Island with Jennifer (she is from Switzerland). We had a nice time and we celebrated her birthday with an small cake :).... On Saturday i stayed at home because like i was saying the weather is crazy around here. There was a Wind Alert (winds of more than 60 Km/Hr) so it was barely possible to go out. Today i went to the Lynn Canyon park again, It is a really nice place to walk and do some exercise... i went there with Jenny and, as well as Friday we had a great morning and afternoon, Thank you Jenny :) 

Se esta poniendo frió y mas frió... He estado hablando acerca de el clima en estas ultimas entradas porque todo este cuento de las cuatro estaciones es nuevo para mi. Aquí uno puede ver el canal de el clima y decidir si hay que llevar chaqueta ese día o no (Es brutal). Hoy tuve finalmente "contacto" con la nieve pero no fue mucho que digamos, pero esta bien para mi. El Viernes pasado fui a Granville Island con Jennifer (Ella es de Suiza). La pasamos muy bien y celebramos su Cumpleaños con un pequeño pastel :)... El sábado me quede en la casa porque como estaba diciendo, el clima por aquí esta loco. Había una alerta de viento (vientos  de mas de 60 Km/hr) entonces era casi imposible salir. Hoy fui a Lynn Canyon park otra vez, es un lugar bastante bacano para caminar y hacer un poco de ejercicio... Fui con Jenny y así como el viernes, pasamos una bacana mañana y tarde, Gracias Jenny :)

Looking for Sun!

Spring is coming! everyone says, but it doesn't look like one... The weather is kind of crazy, it changes all the time, it is very weird... Yesterday I went to Kristilano beach in the West Coast of Vancouver with a few friends, as you can see in the picture below, the weather was amazing, but suddenly gray clouds came from the north and in a couple of minutes it started to rain very hard with few pieces of ice (hail i think), it was crazy but beautiful....... I'm missing the Sun and warm temperatures, sometimes you get sick of this cold (hahaha). After the beach we went to the Granville Island Public Market, it was really cool, they sell everything related with salmon and cretaceous (there was a tank with 100 huge lobsters Alive!) i have never seen such a thing like that!)... This weekend there are not specials plans for me, maybe i will go to walk in a Natural Park but you never know.

La primavera esta en camino! dice todo el mundo, pero el clima no tiene cara de primavera... El clima esta como loco, cambia a todo momento es rarisimo... Ayer fui a la playa de Kristilano en las Playas de Oeste de Vancouver con unos cuantos amigos, como pueden ver en la imagen de abajo, el clima estaba brutal, pero repente, varias nubes negras vinieron desde el norte y en un par de minutos empezó a llover bastante fuerte con mucho granizo, fue loquísimo pero bonito.... Extraño bastante el sol y las temperaturas calientes, algunas veces enferma! (jajajaja).

Luego de ir a la playa fuimos a el Mercado Publico de la Isla de Granville, estuvo bacano, ellos venden de todo relacionado con salmón y crustáceos (había un tanque con 100 Langostas grandísimas Vivas!) Yo nunca había visto algo como eso!... Este fin de semana no tengo nada especial programado, tal vez voy a ir a caminar a algún parque natural, pero uno nunca sabe.
